COMMON PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS

cockroach Elimination and prevention

Cockroaches have always been able to make us uncomfortable, from the sight of them to accidentally stepping on one scurrying across the kitchen floor. They bring to mind images of unsanitary conditions, and unfortunately, all it takes is one or two to tank the reputation of a restaurant.

A cockroach extermination cost will depend on the treatment plan, and what kind of roaches you’re dealing with. When you see one cockroach, the safest course of action is to get a consultation.

There are factors such as the type of cockroach, location, and point of infestation to consider when determining how best to exterminate them, which is why TES offers no-cost, no-obligation on-site assessments.

We will identify the kind of cockroach you’re dealing with and determine the best treatment plan.

Why do I have roaches?

the three most common types of cockroaches in the york and lancaster County areas

1. German Cockroach
The German cockroach is perhaps the most well-known indoor variation, seen worldwide. They favor warm, humid areas, which is why they’re most commonly seen inside in kitchens and bathrooms.

These roaches feed on almost anything and are known for wandering, meaning they can easily travel between houses or apartment units through shared plumbing, pipes, and ductwork.

German cockroaches gain entry into a building or house by stowing away in bags, boxes, and containers; and sometimes they may hide in used appliances as well.

They’re most known for their ability to reproduce quickly. After mating one time, a female can produce an average of 4 to 6 egg cases, with each egg case containing anywhere from 30-40 eggs. The egg cases are carried on the back of the female until they hatch.

German cockroaches are known transmitters of several different pathogens, including Typhus, E.coli, and Salmonella.

Signs of an infestation:
• Droppings that are “pepper-like” in appearance
• Empty egg cases in the area of suspected roach activity
• Odorous secretions that smell “musty” when many German cockroaches are present

2. American Cockroach
These roaches typically live outdoors, preferring warm and damp areas, such as flowerbeds. They’re also known as “palmetto bugs” in various parts of the United States. They’re also commonly found in the sewer systems of many cities. When they enter homes, it’s to find food or water.

They can enter homes by slipping underneath doors, basement windows, or garage doors. These roaches favor the kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, and basement. Their diet consists of leaves, wood particles, fungi, algae, pet food, and crumbs of human food left behind.

American cockroaches have the ability to contaminate food, affect allergies, and spread disease. Studies conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) show these bugs to be potential carriers of organisms that can cause cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, and other viral diseases.

Signs of an infestation:
• Droppings found in dark areas of the home, such as in cabinets, behind appliances, or in basements. Sometimes these are mistaken for mouse droppings but don’t feature any hair
• Egg capsules are roughly 38 mm long and are dark red or blackish brown in color. They’re generally found behind appliances or under cabinets in the basement, laundry room, or kitchen
• Like German cockroaches, the American roach also produces a “musty” odor used to keep the local population in groups

3. Oriental Cockroach
Well-suited for survival in a natural environment, Oriental cockroaches are primarily an outdoor species that gains access to interiors by crawling beneath doors and other gaps in a building’s exterior.

They have a preference for feeding on garbage and other filthy, decaying material. Their need for water is much higher than other species; and while they can go a month without food, they require water at least once every two weeks.

Signs of an infestation:
• During the warmer times of the year, you might see them around landscaping beds, moist gutters, or near storm drains and sewer grates at nighttime when they’re most active
• Their egg cases are dark brown or reddish in color and measure from 8-10 mm in length and each one can hold up to 16 eggs. These egg cases are usually deposited in protected, hidden areas
• Again, a musty odor can accompany large populations of Oriental cockroaches

The price of cockroach extermination can’t be compared to how dangerous it can be to allow roaches to invade your home or business and to have them thrive. Even so, we’ll work with you to create a treatment plan that rids you of these disgusting pests.
